Are you a registered nurse in the Nashville area looking for PRN or per diem shifts to fit around another position or your personal schedule? With ShiftKey, you can see what RN shifts local facilities have posted and request shifts that fit your schedule.
Here’s how it works: Facilities post shifts to the ShiftKey marketplace. You work as an independent contractor, so you choose the ones that fit and propose your rate when you request. The facility decides whether to accept. Start with a ZIP code search to see what's posted near you right now.

At publication, Nashville RN shifts have been posted by skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, inpatient rehab facilities, and behavioral health facilities. Listings change as facilities find coverage and post new shifts, so what you saw last week will differ from what you see today. Search your ZIP code regularly to see what's available.
Before you can see shift details in the ShiftKey app, you’ll need an account, and you'll need to complete our credential verification process.
Once you find a shift you’re interested in, visit the details screen to see whether it fits your schedule. That screen will show you:
- Where the shift is: the full facility address with a Google Maps pin.
- When the shift is: the start date, start and end times and total duration,
- What the shift calls for: the specialty and skill the facility is looking for.
- What kind of facility it is: the facility type, its rating and its bed count.
- What the rate looks like: a suggested bid rate.
- How to contact the facility: You can also call the facility from the shift details page if you have a question before requesting.
The suggested bid rate is a reference point. When you request a shift, you propose the rate you want, but the facility does not see your proposed rate. It reviews all the requests it receives and chooses an independent professional for the shift based on internal criteria, such as experience.
Tennessee RN license requirements
To practice as an RN in Tennessee, you need one of two things:
- A Tennessee RN license from the Tennessee Board of Nursing, or
- An active multistate RN license issued by your primary state of residence, if that state is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Tennessee has been an NLC state since January 19, 2018.
Living in a compact state doesn't automatically give you a multistate license. Nurses who live in a compact state but hold a single-state license need to apply to convert it. A single-state license from another state doesn't cover practice in Tennessee.
If you move to Tennessee, and it becomes your primary state of residence, you must apply for a Tennessee license. The Tennessee Board of Nursing defines primary state of residence as “declared fixed permanent and principal home for legal purposes; domicile.” Nurses licensed elsewhere can apply by endorsement, and the Tennessee Board of Nursing explains the process.
To check where you stand:
- Look up a Tennessee license with the state's license verification tool.
- Use QuickConfirm on Nursys, which is free, to see whether a license is single-state or multistate.
Your license is what allows you to practice as an RN in Tennessee. But it isn't the only requirement when requesting shifts via ShiftKey. ShiftKey has its own credential verification process, which must be completed before you can start requesting shifts. Facilities may have their own requirements for a given shift, and those vary from one facility to the next. Check the requirements on the shift listing before requesting it.
The address and map pin tell you where a shift is, but not what the drive will be like when you need to make it. If your route into Nashville requires a commute on I-24 from the southeast, that matters more than usual because of the I-24 SMART Corridor.
The corridor covers about 28 miles of I-24 between I-440 in Nashville and Murfreesboro, along with the parallel US 70/Murfreesboro Road and connecting routes. On sections of the route, the system uses variable speed limits and overhead lane control signs, along with information boards, so posted speeds and open lanes can change while you're on the road.
Before you request a shift, check the route to estimate the time it will take to get there at the time you’ll be on the road. Here are some helpful resources:
- TDOT SmartWay shows real-time incidents, construction, weather-related road conditions, traffic cameras and message sign text.
- Tennessee 511 gives you traffic, incident, weather and work zone information by phone. Dial 511 in Tennessee.
- I-24 Motion Dashboard displays slowdowns and average speeds from the previous 24 hours.

To request shifts via ShiftKey, you'll need a ShiftKey account. Once ShiftKey has verified your credentials, you’ll be able to request Nashville RN shifts that fit your license, experience and schedule.
