National Assisted Living Week: Celebrating the people and places that make seniors feel at home

Working in Assisted Living is more than a job—it’s an honor. It’s being present for someone’s journey, offering comfort on difficult days, and celebrating the simple joys that mean everything. The reward comes not from recognition, but from knowing that compassion and dedication can transform an ordinary day into a moment of true connection.

Why Assisted Living communities matter

According to NCAL, there are over 32,000 Assisted Living facilities in the United States. They’re an essential part of the senior care industry—communities of professionals that come together with a common mission: to make seniors feel at home.

I enjoy providing a place called home for residents and seeing them thrive, smile and feel appreciated. You know it's hard to leave home and come to a facility so I love and enjoy making them feel at home.

Assisted Living: Home away from home

As Miratta, an administrator at Green Oaks Park Forest Senior Living, says, “It’s hard to leave home and come to a facility.” That journey is one that many have undertaken. NCAL says that one million people, mostly over age 85, reside in Assisted Living communities. While they do not need 24/7 skilled nursing care, they do need help with activities of daily living, such as walking (71%) and bathing (75%).

It’s the warm smile of a resident as you walk into their room, knowing they feel seen and valued. It’s the small victories—helping someone regain independence in a daily activity, or gently reassuring them when confusion or worry sets in.

This year’s National Assisted Living Week theme: ‘Ageless Adventure’

This year’s theme, “Ageless Adventure,” celebrates what NCAL Executive Director LaShuan Bethea calls “the inherent desire for experience and adventure no matter what stage of life someone happens to be in.”

It’s the laughter that fills the dining room when memories are shared, or the joy in a resident’s eyes when a favorite song sparks a story from long ago.

Adventure can take many forms. Maybe it’s listening to someone’s story. A shared moment of vulnerability. A comforting connection when things are hard.

This year’s theme reminds us to stay open and curious. To give others the space to share their adventures, big and small. To be willing to go on our own adventures and share them with the people in our lives.

We think Angela said it best: “The meaning lies in the love, the patience, and the humanity we share—one smile, one story, one moment at a time.”
